Plante vivace de 5-15 cm, glabre, délicate, à souche écailleuse, blanchâtre, munie de rhizomes filiformes; tige herbacée, grêle, simple, dressée, portant 2 feuilles
Écologie : (répartition d'après la flore) Bois, lieux frais et ombragés, dans presque toute la France; nul dans la région méditerranéenne ; Corse.
Répartition hors de France : Europe, surtout centrale et boréale; Caucase, Inde, Sibérie; Amérique boréale.

A small glabrous perennial with slender stems and several radical leaves 5-10 cm high, growing from a far-creeping, fleshy and scaly rhizome
Ecology UK: occurs in shady places and mountain rocks throughout Britain, where it is widespread but not very common; it occurs in Ireland only in co. Antrim.

Fleurs : verdâtres, un peu musquées, 4-6 sessiles en tête terminale cubique, celle du sommet à 4, les autres à 5 divisions ; calice accrescent, à 2-3 lobes obtus, étalés; corolle en roue, à 4-5 lobes plans ; 4-5 étamines, en apparence 8-10, chaque filet étant fendu en 2 branches portant chacune une loge de l'anthère; 4-5 styles en alêne;
Floraison France : Mars-mai.

Flowers: 8-10 mm diam., in a terminal squarish head, lateral flowers 4-partite, terminal flower 5-partite; calyx of two or three bract-like sepals; corolla deeply lobed, light green; stamens 4 or 5 but divided almost to the base so there are 8 or 10 free anthers.
